Question 119193This question is from textbook College Algebra
: Find the area of the triangle with base b and height h.
b=y+1, h=2y
I have already used the formula a=1/2 bh and get confused because it is not a whole number but rather y+1. The book gives no example of such a problem.

Perhaps it would have been less confusing if the question had said "Find an expression for the area..." Sometimes an expression involving a variable or variables is the best you can do with the information given, and that is the case with this problem.

A=%281%2F2%29bh is exactly the correct formula to use. Just plug in the values you are given.

A=%281%2F2%29%28y%2B1%29%282y%29=%28%28y%2B1%29%282y%29%29%2F2

Now multiply the factors together:

A=%282y%5E2%2B2y%29%2F2

Divide out the 2

A=y%5E2%2By

Now you have an expression, in terms of the variable y, that represents the area of the given triangle. You don't always have to come up with a numeric answer. Later on, if someone gives you a value for y, then you can come up with a number.

Think of y%2B1 as a number. For example if y=1, then y%2B1=1%2B1=2. So we can still use this formula

A=%281%2F2%29+bh Start with the given formula

A=%281%2F2%29+%28y%2B1%29%282y%29 Plug in b=y%2B1 and h=2y

A=%281%2F2%29%282y%29%28y%2B1%29 Rearrange the terms

A=y%28y%2B1%29 Multiply 2y and 1%2F2 to get y

A=y%5E2%2By Distribute

So the area of a triangle with base b=y%2B1 and height h=2y is A=y%5E2%2By
