You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Customers can buy apple pies and pumpkin pies.
x = no. of apple pies
y = no. of pumpkin pies
Mr. C sold a total of 34 pies.
x + y = 34
y = (34-x), use this form for substitution
Apple pies are $10 each and pumpkin pies $7. For the school fundraiser, Mr. C made $295.
10x + 7y = 295
replace y with (34-x)
10x + 7(34-x) = 295
10x + 238 - 7x = 295
10x - 7x = 295 - 238
3x = 57
x = 57/3
x = 19 apple pies
and
34 - 19 = 15 pumpkin pies

The answer is given in the statement of the problem: the cost of one apple pie and one pumpkin pie is $10+$7=$17.

Assuming the actual question was how many pies of each type he sold, here is a quick mental solution, if formal algebra is not required....

If all 34 pies were apple pies, the cost would have been $340;
The actual cost was $295, which is $45 less than that;
Each pumpkin pie costs $3 less than each apple pie;
The number of pumpkin pies sold was 45/3=15

ANSWER: 15 pumpkin pies; 34-15=19 apple pies
