Question 1190077: Hi, please help me out! I am having a hard time understanding different types of probability distributions.
Difference between binomial and geometric distribution?
a. Binomial distribution has dependent trials while geometric has independent trials
b. Binomial distribution has independent trials while geometric distribution has dependent trials
c. Geometric distribution involves counting success and binomial distribution involves waiting until success occurs
d. Binomial distribution involves counting in successes while geometric distribution involves waiting until the success occurs (I think this is the correct one)
Difference between binomial and hypergeometric?
a. The binomial distribution involves independent trials while the hypergeometric distribution involves dependent trials (I think this is the correct one)
b. The binomial distribution involves counting success in a specific number of trials and hypergeometric involves waiting time until success
c. The hypergeometric involves counting successes in a specific number of trials, while binomial distribution involves waiting time until success
d. Binomial distribution involves dependent trials and hypergeometric distribution involves independent trials

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Problem 1) Choice D is correct.
The binomial is useful to answer questions like "what is the probability of X number of successes" where X is some nonnegative whole number 0,1,2,3,... while the geometric distribution is useful to find the probability of when the first success happens.
Both involve independent trials, and the probability of success for any given trial is the same.
-----------------------
Problem 2) Choice A is correct.
The hypergeometric distribution involves sampling without replacement.
This will lead to probability values changing as the experiment continues; hence the trials are not independent.
If sampling is done with replacement, then a binomial distribution is used instead. By this point, each event is independent.
Nice work on getting both answers correct. Also I appreciate you showing your thought process rather than simply asking the questions.
