In order to write a scale ratio without using units, you need to convert one of the given values so that it is expressed in the same units as the other. Here we have inches and yards. There are 36 inches in a yard, so 9 yard is 36%2A9=324 inches. That means our scale is 1 inch : 324 inches, but since the units are the same, the scale is actually 1 of anything : 324 of the same anything, or simply put: 1:324.
