If a sphere of radius 8m rests in a circular hole of radius 3m. How far below the plane of the hole does the sphere extend?
---------------------------
It's a right triangle.
Hyp = 8
One side = 3
2nd side = sqrt(8^2 - 3^2) = sqrt(55)
-----
Below the plane = 8+-+sqrt%2855%29

If a sphere of radius 8 m rests in a circular hole of radius 3 m.
How far below the plane of the hole does the sphere extend?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Make a sketch and find a right-angled triangle in it.
The hypotenuse is 8 meters (the radius of the sphere).
One leg is the radius of the small circle, i.e. 3 meters.
Hence, the other leg is  sqrt%288%5E2+-+3%5E2%29 = sqrt%2855%29 = 7.416  meters (rounded).
Thus the value under the problem's question is this difference  8 - 7.416 = 0.584 meters = 58.4 cm = 584 mm.    ANSWER
Solved.
