Question 118888: 4 clues to solve for a number.
Clue #1 My number is even.
Clue #2 The factorization is a string of two numbers.
Clue #3 The string of numbers has 1 even and 1 odd number.
Clue #4 My number is less than the 3rd square number and larger than the 2nd square number.
What is my number.
I have no idea how to solve this. Do I pick random numbers and go backward in the clues? Please help. Answer by jim_thompson5910(35256) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let's look at the fourth clue. It says "My number is less than the 3rd square number and larger than the 2nd square number". The 3rd square is 9 and the 2nd square is 4. So our number is between 4 and 9. Now looking at the first clue, we know that the number is even. So our number could be 6 or 8 (it cannot be 4).
If we factor 8, we get
8:2*2*2
which shows that the factorization of 8 has a string of three numbers. So this eliminates 8 and leaves us with 6
