James, Kyle and Leonard were given some money by their uncle. 1/5 of James
money is the same as 3/4 of Kyle’s money and 2/5 of Leonard’s money. Given that
Kyle received $7 less than Leonard, how much did their uncle give the boys?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let James' money be 30x.
Then 1/5 of James' money is 6x, and it is the same as 3/4 of Kyle's money.
Hence, 1/4 of Kyle's money is 2x; it means that Kyle's money is 8x.
Also, from the problem, 1/5 of of James' money, i.e. 6x, is 2/5 of Leonard's money.
Hence, 1/5 of Leonard's money is 3x, which means that the total Leonard's money is 15x.
We are given that Leonard's money - Kyle money = 7 dollars, or
15x - 8x = 7.
It implies
7x = 7,
x = 1 dollars.
ANSWER. The boys have $30 (James), $8 (Kyle) and $15 (Leonard).
In total, they have 30 + 8 + 15 = 53 dollars.
The uncle gave them $53.
