Question 1188019: Hi
Edmund bought some packs of cookies. A small pack costs $4, a medium pack costs $6 and a large pack costs $8 . 1/3 of the packs were small. He bought 1/5 more medium packs than small. The remaining were large. If he spent 180 dollars, how many packs of each did he buy.
Thanks

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

The problem is faulty. The numbers of packs of each size must be whole numbers, which they are not with the given information.

Let x be the total number of packs.

1/3 of the packs were small:
%281%2F3%29x = number of small packs

The number of medium packs was 1/5 more than the number of small packs -- i.e., 6/5 times as many:
%286%2F5%29%281%2F3%29x+=+%282%2F5%29x = number of medium packs

The rest of the packs were large:
x+-+%281%2F3%29x+-+%282%2F5%29x+=+%2815%2F15%29x-%285%2F15%29x-%286%2F15%29x+=+%284%2F15%29x = number of large packs

The total cost is then

%2888%2F15%29x=180
88x=2700
x=2700%2F88

That is not a whole number....
