Supposedly, it is a convenient way to group/organize and display the data.
In this case the stem is the tens digit, and the leaf is the units digit, s8 4 | 8 means 48, and 3 | 2 3 8 means 32,33, and 38.
Looking at the stem and leaf diagram, plot, chart, or whatever they want it called, you can see that most of the values were in the single digits, but there was also a sizable group in the twenties.
The values they list are
1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 8, 9, 18, 22, 24, 29, 29, 32, 33, 38, and 48.
The stem and leaf plot could help you visualize the mode and median.
MODE:
The mode is the most repeated value.
In this case there are two values that appear twice; 4, and 29.
We say it is a bimodal distribution (2 modes).
MEDIAN:
The median is the value in the middle of an ordered set of values if there is an odd number of values. If there is an even number of values, the middle of an ordered list in between two values. you average those two values to get a value exactly in the middle of those two.
In this case, there are 16 values (8 with stems 0 or 1, and 8 other values), as you can see so well from the stem and leaf diagram. So the median is 20, average of 18 and 22.
MEAN:
The mean is the average of all the values. You would add them and divide the sum by the number of values.
I guess I could add the leaf values for each stem:
1+2+3+4+4+8+9=31, 8, 2+4+9+9=24, 2+3+8=13, and 8
The stem 1 means 10 to be added 1 time.
The stem 2 means 20 added 4 times as 4X20=80.
The stem 3 means 30 to be added 3 times as 3X20=90
The stem 4 means 40 to be added once.
I add (31+8+24+13+8)+(10+80+90+40)=84+220=304 to get the sum.
Then divide by 16 to get the mean: 304/16=19
