Let number Tommy and Charlie have, be T, and C, respectively
Then we get:
8C = 3T ------ Cross-multiplying ----- eq (i)
Also, T = C + 25 ----- eq (ii)
8C = 3(C + 25) ----- Substituting C + 25 for T in eq (i)
8C - 3C = 75
5C = 75
Number Charlie has, or
T = 15 + 25 ------ Substituting 15 for C in eq (ii)
Number Tommy has, or
Amount both have: 15 + 40 = 55
