Question 1186517: Your home is built on a square lot. To add more space to your yard, you purchased an additional 8m along the side of the property. The area of the lot is now 345 sq m. What are the dimensions of the new lot?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Algebraically....

x%28x%2B8%29=345
x%5E2%2B8x=345
x%5E2%2B8x-345=0

To solve that algebraically, you need to find two numbers whose product is 345 and whose difference is 8.

But that's what the original problem required you to do -- so the formal algebra doesn't get you any closer to the solution.

Solve the problem informally instead by simply looking for ways to factor 345....

345 = 3*115 = 3*5*23 = 15*23

ANSWER: The new dimensions of the lot are 15m by 23m.
