Desmond’s total allowance = $44 ÷ 5 × 8
= $70.40
Luke’s total allowance = $70.40 × 3/8 ÷ 5 × 6
= $31.68
Total allowance = $70.40 + $31.68
= $102.08

Let D and L represent the amounts of Desmond's and Luke's allowances, respectively. Then

(1) D-L=44
(2) (3/8)D=(5/6)L

Solve (2) for L and substitute in (1):

L=(6/5)(3/8)D = (18/40)D = (9/20)D

D-(9/20)D = 44
(11/20)D = 44
D = 80
80-L = 44
L = 36

ANSWER: Their total allowance was $80+$36 = $116
