5/9 of her money was enough to buy 36 cupcakes and 32 muffins; the price of a cupcake was 3 times the price of a muffin.

So 5/9 of her money was enough to buy 3(36)+32=140 muffins.

That means the whole amount of money she had was enough to buy 140(9/5)=252 muffins, which is enough to buy 252/3=84 muffins.

So when she then spent 1/6 of her money to buy more cupcakes, she spent enough to buy 84/6=14 more cupcakes.

So all together she bought 36+14=50 cupcakes.

The cupcakes cost a total of $187.50, so the price of each cupcake was $187.50/50 = $3.75.

That means the price of a muffin was $3.75/3 = $1.25.

So she bought 32 muffins for $1.25 each, spending a total of 32($1.25) = $40 on the muffins.
