You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Two buses leave towns 432 miles apart at the same time and travel toward each other.
One bus travels 12 (mi)/(h) faster than the other.
If they meet in 3 hours, what is the rate of each bus?
:
let s = speed of the slower bus
then
(s+12) = speed of the faster
:
When the buses meet, their total traveled distances will = 432 mi
Write a dist equation, dist = speed * time
3s + 3(s+12) = 432
3s + 3s + 36 = 432
6s = 432 - 36
6s = 396
s = 396/6
s = 66 mph is the slower bus
then at 12 mph faster
66 + 12 = 78 mph is the faster bus
:
:
You can confirm this
3 * 66 = ____
3 * 78 = ____
---------------- add
total dist:
