Peter had 3/8 as many marbles as Simon. After Simon misplaced 3/4 of his marbles,
Peter had 120 more marbles than Simon. How many marbles did Peter have?
~~~~~~~~~~~
Let Simon = x.
Then Peter = %283%2F8%29x.
The equation
    %283%2F8%29x - %28x-%283%2F4%29x%29 = 120.
Simplify and find x
    %283%2F8%29x - %281%2F4%29x = 120
    %281%2F8%29x = 120
    x = 8*120 = 960.
ANSWER.  Pater had  %283%2F8%29%2A960 = 3*120 = 360 marbles.
Solved.
The solution from the other tutor is fine.
Many students might prefer setting up the problem so it can be solved without using fractions....
Given that Peter had 3/8 as many marbles as Simon, let their numbers of marbles by 3x and 8x.
After Simon misplaced 3/4 of his marbles, he had 1/4 of the original number left -- 1/4 of 8x, or 2x.
The number Peter had was now 120 more than Simon had:
3x-2x=120
x=120
The number Peter had was 3x=360.
ANSWER: Peter had 360 marbles
Peter had 3/8 as many marbles as Simon. After Simon misplaced 3/4 of his marbles, Peter had 120 more marbles than Simon. How many marbles did Peter have?
With Peter (P) having 3%2F8 of marbles that Simon (S) has, Simon (S) would have: matrix%281%2C4%2C+%288%2F3%29P%2C+or%2C+8P%2F3%2C+marbles%29
Since Simon misplaced 3%2F4 of his marbles, he would have: matrix%281%2C3%2C+%281%2F4%29+%2A+%288P%2F3%29%2C+or%2C+2P%2F3%29 left
With Peter (P) now having 120 more marbles than Simon, we get: matrix%281%2C3%2C+P%2C+%22=%22%2C+2P%2F3+%2B+120%29
3P = 2P + 360 ------ Multiplying by LCD, 3
