.
Kids under 12 and seniors over 62 get discounts on airline tickets.
Write an absolute value inequality to express this
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    |a - 37| > 25.
The set of those passengers who have a discount, is those passengers, whose age  " a "  satisfies this inequality.
Notice that 37 is exactly half way between 12 and 62, and 25 is exactly half the distance between 62 and 12.
Solved and explained.
comment from student :   Thank you very much.   Just wondering when to use  >  and when to use  <  for such problems?
I am guessing,   the general method for such problems is:   |age - (62 + 12)/2 | > (62 - 12) / 2
My response :   Regarding the formula,   you are right.   Your thinking is correct.
Regarding the signs  " > "  and  " < ",   we use  " < "  in such problems to describe what happens   INSIDE   the interval,
and we use  " > "  to describe what happens  OUTSIDE  the interval.
