Question 1183125: I am really having trouble plugging this in correctly into my calculator. I realize that I need to solve for each side as a logarithm, but after that I am not getting the correct answer.
Solve by taking the logarithm of each side. Round answer to 3 decimal places.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
4w = 1976
divide both sides by 4 to get:
w = 1976/4 = 494
you don't need logs to solve this.

if the equation is 4^w = 1976, then use of logs would be indicated.
you would take the log of both sides of the equation to get:
log(4^w) = log(1976)
this is equal to w * log(4) = log(1976)
solve for w to get:
w = log(1976) / log(4) = 5.474183616

confirm by replacing w in the original equation to get:
4^5.474183616 = 1976
simplify to get:
1976 = 1976
this confirms the answer is correct.

the ^ symbol signifies exponentiation.
2^3 = 2 raised to the third power = 8.

.

In a way,  how  YOU  write your starting equation,  IT  IS  A  LINEAR  EQUATION,  which  DOES  NOT  REQUIRE  taking/using logarithm.

If your question relates to  EXPONENTIAL  EQUATION,  then write it correctly before posting.

If you post/write your starting equation incorrectly,  then there is no sense to discuss it with you.

You can try using factorization of 1976, since it is a factor of 4.

Which base you choose does not matter now. It may as well be 10 for Common Logarithms.
