Question 1183063: Test the claim that the proportion of men that own cats is significantly different than 40% at the 0.02 significance level.
The null and alternative hypothesis would be: = Ho: p = 0.4
H1: p = 0.4 (this equal sign has
a line in it).
The test is: = two-tailed
Based on a sample of 500 people, 44% own cats
The test statistic is: _______ 2 decimal places
The positive critical value is: ________ 2 decimals

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The first part is correct.
test stat is z and reject for |z| >2.326 or 2.33 (one answer)
z=(0.44-0.40)/sqrt(0.4*0.6/500), the difference from the mean divided by the sd
=0.04/0.0219
=1.83 (the other answer)
fail to reject Ho and insufficient evidence to support the contention that the proportion is not 0.40.
p-value is 0.068.
