Question 1182376: The Precision Scientific Instruments company manufactures thermometers that
are supposed to read 0
𝑜𝐶 at the freezing point of water. Tests on these
instruments revealed that at the freezing point of water some thermometers
give readings above zero degrees Celsius while other thermometers give
readings below zero degrees Celsius with an average of zero degrees Celsius
and a standard deviation of the readings ion 0.9
𝑜𝐶. Assume that the readings are
normally distributed,
1. If a sample of 40 thermometers is picked from the stock purchased from
this company, what proportion would read between +𝟎. 𝟓𝒐𝑪 and +𝟏. 𝟐𝒐𝑪.
2. The lengths of pregnancies are normally distributed with a mean of 260 days
and a standard deviation of 15 days. If we stipulate that a baby is premature if
the length of pregnancy is in the lowest 4%, find the length that separates
premature babies from those who are not premature.
