You can put this solution on YOUR website! Julius can paint a house three (3) times faster than Ruben. Working together, they can paint a house in four (4) days. How long would it take the faster painter if he work alone?
--------------------
Ruben DATA:
Time = 3x days/job ; Rate = 1/3x job/day
-------------
Julius DATA:
Time = x days/job ; Rate = 1/x job/day
--------------
Together DATA:
Time = 4 days/job ; Rate = 1/4 job/day
==================
EQUATION:
rate + rate = together rate
1/3x + 1/x = 1/4
Multiply thru by 12x to get:
4 + 12 = 3x
16 = 3x
x = 16/3 days/job = 5 1/3 (Julius's Time to do the job)
