You can put this solution on YOUR website! Each of four siblings (Edmund, Genalyn, Madelyn, and Sonia) bought four
different cars. One chooses a Honda, a Mitsubishi, a Toyota, and a Suzuki
car. From the following clues, determine which sibling bought which car.
a. Edmund, living alone, stays next door to his sister who bought the Honda
car and very far from his sister who bought the Suzuki car.
b. Genalyn, also living alone, is younger than the one who bought the
Mitsubishi car and older than her sibling who bought the Toyota car.
c. Madelyn did not like Toyota and Suzuki cars. But she (Madelyn) and her
sibling, who bought the Toyota car, live in the same house.
There are 3 houses.
Edmund lives in one by himself (by clue a)
Genalyn lives in one house by herself (by clue b)
Therefore Madalyn & Sonia live in the same house
So we have three houses. We start with all four cars for each person and
we will eliminate them using the clues.
House House 1 House 2 House 3
Resident(s) Edmund Genalyn Madalyn & Sonia
Cars? HMTS HTMS HTMS HTMS
Edmund did not buy the Honda (by clue a)
Edmund did not buy the Suzuki (by clue a)
Edmund did not buy the Toyota (by clue c, since he lives alone)
Therefore Edmund bought the Mitsubishi.
We eliminate all but the Mitsubishi for Edmund in house 1
We eliminate the Mishibish from Houses 2 and 3
Now we have this:
House House 1 House 2 House 3
Resident(s) Edmund Genalyn Madalyn & Sonia
Cars M HT S HT S HT S
The Toyota goes to house 3 (by clue c)
So we eliminate Toyota from House 2
Now we have this:
House House 1 House 2 House 3
Resident(s) Edmund Genalyn Madalyn & Sonia
Cars M H S HT S HT S
We eliminate T from Madelyn (clue c), and so Sonia bought the T,
So we eliminate H and from Sonia, and eliminate the T from Madelyn
Now we have:
House House 1 House 2 House 3
Resident(s) Edmund Genalyn Madelyn & Sonia
Cars M H S H S T
Madelyn did not like Suzuki (clue 3) so we eliminate S from Madelyn, and
since that leaves only H for Madelyn, we must eliminate H from Genalyn in
House 2.
So we end up with this:
House House 1 House 2 House 3
Resident(s) Edmund Genalyn Madalyn & Sonia
Cars M S H T
Edmund bought the Mitsubishi.
Genalyn bought the Subaru.
Madelyn bought the Honda.
Sonia bought the Toyota.
