No way related to inverse operations. The equation is false.

Show the whole exact exercise item word for word with all instructions for the item.

If you really have X-10.8=2.92 then it is same as to mean
X%2B%28-10.8%29=2.92
steps using inverse operations can be
X%2B%28-10.8%29%2B%2810.8%29=2.92%2B10.8
X%2B0=2.92%2B10.8
X=2.92%2B10.8
X=13.72

Exactly when to simplify may vary. Most of the time, to solve such a equation, you would not need the number of steps shown here. Most of the time one would do something more like this:
X-10.8=2.92
X=2.92%2B10.8
X=13.72

an inverse operation is an operation that reverses the effects of another operation.

not exactly sure what your operation is.

if it's something minus 10.8 = 2.92 then 2.92 + 10.8 equals that something.

this means that something must be equal to 13.72.

consider,

13.72 - 10.8 = 2.92 if and only if 2.92 + 10.8 = 13.72.

the operation is subtraction.

the inverse operation is addition.

the inverse operation of multiplication is division.

for 6th grade, operations of subtraction and addition and multiplication and division should be enough.

some examples:

5 - 2 = 3 if and only if 3 - 2 = 5

5 + 2 = 7 if and only if 7 - 2 = 5

3 * 5 = 15 if and only if 15 / 3 = 5

20 / 10 = 2 if and only if 2 * 10 = 20

not sure if this helps.

let me know if you need more and also give me some more example of problems your 6th grader is working on that i can use as examples.
