| Question 1175657: Raw material used in the production of synthetic fiber is
stored in a place which has no humidity control.
Measurements of the relative humidity in the storage
place and the moisture content of a sample of the raw
material (both in percentages) on 10 days yielded the
 following results:
 Humidity x 42 35 50 43 48 62 31 36 44 39 55 48
 Moisture
 content y 12 8 14 9 11 16 7 9 12 10 13 11
 (i) Make a scatter plot to verify that it is reasonable to
assume that the regression of y on x is linear
(ii) Fit a straight line by the method of least squares,
(iii) Predict the moisture content when humidity is 70%.
 (iv) Determine the correlation coefficien

You can put this solution on YOUR website! The scatter plot shows a reasonable approximation to a linear function. The function is y=0.27x-0.95
when the humidity is 70% (x), the moisture content is 17.9%. Note: we are extrapolating from the regression curve, which is potentially a problem, since we are far more comfortable what is going on between thelmitis of humidity in the data collected. Just something to know.

 Correlation coefficient is 0.91.
