Factor it as follows


    x^4 - 16x^2 + 48 = (x^2-12)*(x^2-4) = %28x-2%2Asqrt%283%29%29%2A%28x%2B2%2Asqrt%283%29%29%2A%28x-2%29%2A%28x%2B2%29.


The roots are  2sqrt%283%29, -2%2Asqrt%283%29, 2 and -2.
