Question 117454: I am afraid I am doing the following problem wrong. Please help
The problme is......find the equation for the folowing lines and then graph them using any graphing utility.
(A) Perpendicular to x+2y=10, and passing through the point (1,1)
I thought I was supposed to first solve for x and y which I got y=5 and x=10.....WHen I graph that i get a straight line passing throu (1,1).
Can you please help? THank you!!! Answer by Fombitz(32388) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! First, you have to find the slope of your first line, x+2y=10.
You need to go to slope-intercept form.
Now you know the slope of your first line is -1/2.
Then use the point slope form of a line to get the equation of the second line.
Perpendicular lines have slopes that have a particular relationship.
That is, their slopes are negative reciprocals.
The slope of your second line is then,
Now use the point-slope form and substitute,
where and
