Question 117453: I am having troubles completing the following word problem.......
J. Bond and E. Blofeld are driving speedboats in opposite directions after a failed attepmt by the latter to blow up the world with a nuclearbomb. Mr. Bond's boat is going 25 MPH faster than Mr. Blofeld's. After 3 hours they are 500 miles apart. How fast was each of them going?
This is what i have so far but I am stuck
x^2+y^2=500^2
x^2(x^2+25)^2=500^2
x^2+x^2+50x+625=250,000
2x^2+50x+625-625=250,000-625
2x^2+50x-249,375=0
2x^2+50x-249,375=0 divided by 2
x2+25x-124687.50
I am not sure what to do next. Please help. THank you so much!!!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
3X+3(X+25)=500
3X+3X+75=500
6X=500-75
6X=425
X=425/6
X=70.8333 MOPH FOR BLOFELDS BOAT SPEED
70.8333+25=95.8333 MPN FOR BIOND'S BOAT
PROOF
3*95.8333+3*70.8333=500
287.5+212.5=500
500=500
