Sarah's uncle Max is twice as old as she is. 

*Let x be Sarah's age NOW and Max's age NOW be 2x.  

Twelve years ago, Max was three times as old a Sarah. 

(2x-12) = 3(x-12)

2x-12 = 3x - 36

   24 = x     Sarah is 24  and Max is 48

checking our work.

12 years ago...

 36  = 3*12 = 36  checks
