Hi,
Two numbers differ by 5. The quotient of the larger number(y) and 2 is 13 more than twice the smaller number(x)
Let x represent the smaller number and y represent the Larger:
Write as You Read: x
y - x = 5
y/2 = 2x + 13
y - x = 5
y/2 -2x = 13 |Multiply 2nd EQ by -2 to eliminate y
y - x = 5
-y + 4x = -26
3x = -21
x = -7, the smaller number. Larger numbers is -2
Checking our Answer:
y/2 = 2x + 13
-1 = -14 + 13 checks
