You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1 inch is to 3 miles as
6 inches is to 18 miles
1/3=6/x with appropriate units, x=18 miles.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

(1 inch)/(3 miles) = (6 inches)/(x miles)

1/3 = 6/x

1*x = 3*6 ... cross multiply

x = 18

Six inches on the map represent 18 miles in real life.

Note: the proportion 1/3 = 6/x is one way of many other options to solve this problem. You could apply the reciprocal to both sides to get the same thing. Or you could have 1/6 = 3/x and you'd get the same answer.
