Question 1166324: If triangle ABC is isosceles, B is the vertex angle, AB = 20x + 10, BC = 13x + 66, and AC= 25x, find x and the measure of each side of the triangle Found 2 solutions by ikleyn, Edwin McCravy:Answer by ikleyn(52855) (Show Source):
Solve this equation
20x + 10 = 13x + 66
and find x = = 8.
Now evaluate the length of each side
AB = 20*8 + 10 = 170
BC = AB = 170
AC = 25*8 = 200.
The triangle inequalities are satisfied, so the triangle does exist.
ANSWER. The side lengths are 170, 170 and 200.
Solved.
I went all this way / (all the steps) with you to show you that every step is necessary, especially checking the triangle inequalities at the end.
