Question 1165032: The grade in Ma. Elena’s history class will be determined completely by three tests, each worth 100 points. She scored 78 and 84 on the first two test, but still hopes to get an Excellent grade, which would require an average of 92. What’s the minimum score she can get on the third test?
can you solve using Polya 4step solution?

I will use my approach since I don't know Polya
passing is average of 92
mean=total/n
92=total/3
276=total
scores are 78 and 84, which add to 162
276-162=114, which is required.
Check
her first test was 14 below the average needed
her second test was 8 below the average needed
she is 22 points below the average needed
on the third test, she has to get 22 points above the average needed, or 92+22 = 114.

Minimum score on 3rd in order to get a 92 or above is, 114, which is NOT POSSIBLE since the MAXIMUM score on ANY test is 100.
A MAXIMUM score of 100 only gives her an 87 average.
BOTTOM LINE: She CANNOT get an excellent grade!
