| Question 116455: Can you please show me how to solve this problem step by step please ? 0.8-4(X-1)= 0.2 + 3(4-X).I just need to see how the process works and why you apply those steps to the problem.

      (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! 0.8 - 4(X-1) = 0.2 + 3(4-X) :
First multiply what's inside the brackets, remember a minus outside changes the signs
 .8 - 4x + 4 = .2 + 12 - 3x
 :
 -4x + 4.8 = 12.2 - 3x; added the numerical values on both sides
 :
Usually combine the unknowns (x) on the left and numerical values on the right
 -4x + 3x = 12.2 - 4.8
 :
 -1x = +7.4
 :
1x = -7.4; x has to be positive, multiplied both sides by -1
 :
 :
It's a good idea to substitute your solution for x in the original equation
 :
 0.8-4(-7.4-1)= 0.2 + 3(4-(-7.4))
 .8 - 4(-8.4) = .2 + 3(4 +7.4); minus a minus is plus
 .8 + 33.6 = .2 + 3(11.4)
 34.4 = .2 + 34.2; equality reigns, confirming our solution of x = -7.4
 :
Some like to get rid of the decimals by first multiplying both sides by 10 (in this case) and that is OK to do.
 You would then have:
 8 - 40(X-1)= 2 + 30(4-X); you can solve it this way also
