The wording of the problem is not at all nonsensical....

Unusual, to be sure; but it is mathematically sound.

the number: n
11 added to the number: n+11
that sum doubled: 2(n+11)

-3 less than the number: n-(-3) = n+3

So

2%28n%2B11%29+=+n%2B3

Solve using basic algebra.
