Question 1163389: Starting at the same spot on a circular track that is 80 meters in diameter, Hillary and Eugene run in opposite directions, at 300 meters per minute and 240 meters per minute, respectively. They run for 50 minutes. What distance separates Hillary and Eugene when they finish?
Answer by Boreal(15235) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! C=πD=80 π perimeter or 251.24 m
H. runs at 300 m/min*50 min=15000 m
divide that by 80π=59.683 circumferences and 171.68 m from the start, multiplying the 0.683 remainder by 80π.
E. runs at 240 m/min*50 min=12000 m.
divide that by 80π to get 47.746 circumferences and 187.612 m from the start in the opposite direction.
If one draws on the circle those distances, 171.68 m say for counterclockwise (H), that leaves 79.56 m between her and the start,
for clockwise (E), he has gone 187.61 m from the start clockwise, leaving him 63.63 m from the start.
The two distances from the start are not overlapping, so the distance between the two has to be the circumference minus the sum of the two distances from the start or 108.05 or 108 m.
