Question 1161922: A rectangular lawn has the following description:
Length; 60 yards.
Width; 40 yds.
A 6 ft. wide walkway surrounding lawn.
Paths of same width are through lawn, connecting on opposite sides.
Determine area in sq. yds. 1 of the 4 plots enclosed by the paths.
Not sure how to solve.
Assuming the overall dimensions of 60 by 40 yards are inclusive of the surrounding walkway:
In either direction, there are three 6-foot wide walkways and the rest is the lawn. 6 feet is 2 yards, so there are 3 times 2 = 6 yards of concrete leaving 34 yards of lawn. Since there are two pieces of lawn, 34 divided by 2 is 17 yards which is the width of one of the pieces of lawn. Similarly, the length of each piece of lawn is 27 yards. The area is the product of 17 and 27.
