Let Jim's age be x.

Then his father's age is x+31 (Jim is 31 years younger than his father).

And his grandfather's age is x+70 (His grandfather is 70 years older than he is).

The sum of their ages is 137:

%28x%29%2B%28x%2B31%29%2B%28x%2B70%29+=+137

Solve using basic algebra....

.

From combined age of 137 years first subtract 70 years and then subtract 31 year.

Then divide the result by 3 to get Jim's age as 12 years.

Then the father's age is 12 + 31 = 43 and the grandfather's age is 12 + 70 = 82 years.

CHECK. 12 + 43 + 82 = 137. ! Correct !

Solved.
