Question 1159052: Chemists were creating th worlds longest lasting perfume called 24/7. first attempt they combined 5 milliliters of a substance containing 2% sandalwood with another subastance containing 6% sandalwood to get a substance containing 5% sandalwood. How many milliliters of the substance containing 6% sandalwood must they have used? Answer by greenestamps(13216) (Show Source):
The setup for the traditional algebraic solution....
5 ml of 2%, plux x ml of 6%, equals (5+x) ml of 5%:
ANSWER: 15 ml of the 6% sandalwood.
A much faster and easier solution method -- if a formal algebraic solution is not required....
5% is 3/4 of the way from 2% to 6%; therefore 3/4 of the mixture must be the 6% sandalwood. So the 5 ml of 2% is 1/4 of the mixture; that means the amount of 6% sandalwood is 15 ml.
