You can put this solution on YOUR website!
It takes a smaller hose 4 times as long to fill a certain swimming pool as it does a larger hose.
It takes both hoses working together 25 minutes to fill the pool.
How long will it take the larger hose to fill the pool by itself?
:
Let t = time for the larger hose to fill the pool
then
4t = time for smaller hose to do the job
and
let the completed job = 1 (a full pool)
:
A typical shared work equation
each will do a fraction of the job, the two fractions add up 1
25%2Ft + 25%2F%284t%29 = 1
multiply by 4t, cancel out the denominators
4(25) + 25 = 4t
100 + 25 = 4t
t = 125/4
t = 31.25 min for the large hose to fill the pool

Check
25%2F31.5 + 25%2F%284%2831.5%29%29 = 1
25%2F31.5 + 25%2F125 = 1
.8 + .2 = 1
