I have tried moving -12xy to the left side, I have tried xy(4y+9x) all I manage to do is confuse myself.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Convert +4y%5E2%2B9x%5E2=-12xy+ to
+9x%5E2++%2B+12+xy+%2B+4y%5E2=+0+.
Note the left hand side is a complete square
So, we have +%283x+%2B+2y%29%5E2+=+0+
Hence, 3x+2y = 0 and we obtain
y = -3x/2
That is the whole story.
If you cannot see the complete square or you cannot factor
out the left hand side. Then consider x as a constant,y as
a variable and use the quadratic formual to solve y in terms of x.
