Question 1157496: With the airplane fueled and the cargo loaded the pilot and his passenger are ready to take off into the heart of the Amazon. The average speed for the Cessna 172 Skyhawk in still air is 140 miles per hour. The pilot tells his passenger that they are flying with a 28 mile per hour wind at their back and they'll arrive 15 minutes earlier than they would have without the wind. How long will the flight take with the help of the wind? Found 2 solutions by ikleyn, josmiceli:Answer by ikleyn(52818) (Show Source):
Let " t " be the time (in hours) to get the destination with tailwind (the unknown value under the question).
Then the regular time is (t+0.25) hours.
For the distance, you have this equation to find "t"
140*(t+0.25) = (140+28)*t
or
140t + 35 = 140t + 28t
35 = 28t
t = = hours = 75 minutes = 1 hour and 15 minutes. ANSWER
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let = the time in hrs for the trip without the wind
Let = the distance to their destination
-------------------
Without the wind:
(1)
With the tailwind:
(2)
(2)
(2)
--------------------------------------------
Plug (1) into (2)
(2)
(2)
(2)
------------------------
With the wind, the time is:
With the tailwind, the flight will take 1 hr 15 min
--------------------
check:
(1)
(1)
(1) mi
and
(2)
(2)
(2)
(2) mi
OK
