Question 1155840: The volume of the rectangular block in the figure is calculated from the following measurements of its dimensions:
a= 10.00 ± 0.10 cm, b= 5.00 ± 0.06 cm and c= 4.00 ± 0.04 cm.
Calculate the error in the value of the volume of the block assuming:
a) the errors are independent
b) the errors are correlated such that they all push the estimate in the same direction.
2. May I also ask, what are the key clues that I must look at when solving the the above questions? Answer by ikleyn(52835) (Show Source):
The volume is the product of the three dimensions Volume = abc.
You should calculate the volume TWICE using UPPER LEVEL dimensions and LOWER LEVEL dimensions.
The difference is the answer to question (a) and to question #2.
Regarding question (b), I do not understand what does it mean.
