An open rectangular tank that is 4m long, 2m wide and 4.8m high, is initially three quarters filled with water.
Find the depth of water in tank after 4000 liters of water are added to.
:
4 * 2 * 4.8 = 38.4 cu/m is the vol of the tank
and
.75 * 38.4 = 28.8 cu/m is 3/4 of the volume which is filled with water
and
4000/1000 = 4 cubic meters
therefore
28.8 + 4 = 32.8 cu/meters after 4000 liters are added
:
let h = the height of the water after 4000 liters is added
:
4 * 2 * h = 32.8
8h = 32.8
h = 32.8/8
h = 4.1 meters is the height of the water

The cross sectional area of the tank is 4m times 2m, which is 8 square meters.

The added 4000 liters is 4 cubic meters; in the tank with a cross sectional area of 8 square meters, the depth will be 0.5m.

The initial depth was 3/4 of 4.8m, or 3.6m; after the 4000 liters are added, the depth will be 3.6+0.5 = 4.1m.
