: Could someone please help me with this problem.
A recipe requires 3/4 cup of flour and makes enough for six people. How much flour should be used to make enough for 15 people. I came up with 15/8 of a cup of flour but I've been told that is wrong. Please show me what I am doing wrong. This question is from textbook BEginning and Intermediate algebra
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let x=amount of flour needed for 15 people
Now lets set up a ratio:
3/4 is to 6 as x is to 15 and this is written as follows
(3/4)/6=x/15 The LCM is 30, so we multiply each side by 30
((30)(3/4))/6=30x/15 simplifying
15/4=2x multiply each side by 4
15=8x divide both sides by 8
x=15/8 cup
ANOTHER WAY:
(3/4) cup for 6 people means (1/6)(3/4) or (3/24) or (1/8) cup per person
Now if we have 15 people, then we need (1/8)(15) or 15/8 cups
Hope this helps---ptaylor
