1)Anna is twice as old as Melody. Five years ago, Anna was three times as old as Melody. How old is Anna now?

2m=a
a-5=3(m-5)
2m-5=3m-15
subtract 2m from both sides.
-5=m-15
add 15 to both sides.
m=10
a=20


2)John is three years younger than Peter. If the sum of their ages in five years is 53 years, How old is John and Peter now?

j+3=p
(j+5)+(p+5)=53
j+5+j+3+5=53
2j+13=53
subtract 13 from both sides.
2j=40
j=20
p=17
