Question 115303: I am having difficulty adding these. I say we have to find the common denminator but someone else said just add them across. Would you tell me which way is right? Thanks so much for your help.

Add. Write your answer as a common fraction or a mixed fraction
3/4 + 7/10 + 4/15
I am not sure but I came up with 14/20
Thank you again for you help.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

REMEMBER:
Addition of rational numbers can be computed using the+least+common+denominator, but a conceptually simpler definition involves only integer addition and multiplication:
a%2Fb+%2B+c%2Fd+=+%28ad+%2B+bc%29%2Fbd
So, you will have:
3%2F4+%2B+7%2F10+%2B+4%2F15………… the lest common denominator is 60
%283%2F4%2960+%2B+%287%2F10%2960+%2B+%284%2F15%2960…………reduce
3%2A15%2B+7%2A6+%2B+4%2A4…………
45%2B+42+%2B+16…………
103………… the numerator becomes
Since the denominator, of course, is 60, so the fraction is 103%2F60 or 1+%2843%2F60%29
