Question 1152795: jeff drives to see his college buddy. He takes the freeway there, driving 60 mph. On the way back, jeff drives 40 mph. The return trip takes 2 hours longer. How many hours did Jeff drive on the freeway to see his buddy? Found 2 solutions by josgarithmetic, ikleyn:Answer by josgarithmetic(39630) (Show Source):
Let "t" be the time in hours that Jeff drove on freeway.
Then on the way back, he drove (t+2) hours.
The equation to find t is
60*t = 40*(t+2).
saying that the distance each way is the same.
From this equation
60t = 40t + 80
60t - 40t = 80
20t = 80
t = 80/20 = 4.
ANSWER. 4 hours.
