Question 1152791: In 2009 the federal minimum wage increased from $6.55 per hour to $7.25 per hour. By what percentage did the minimum wage increase?
7.55-6.25=$0.7/7.55=0.096*100=9.6%
7.55-6.25=0.7/6.25=0.106*100=10.6%
Are either of these solutions correct? Where am I going wrong?

When you have a problem of this type
"The value of X increased from "a" to "b". By what percentage did the value of X increase ?"
it is important to relate the difference to the right base.
The common agreement is that in such problems, the difference should be related to the original value,
i.e. to value of "a", in this case.
