A truck enters a highway driving 60 mph. A car enters the highway at the same place 8 minutes later and drives 73 mph in the same direction.
From the time the car enters the highway, how long will it take the car to pass the truck?
:
let t = travel time of the car
then
%28t+%2B+%288%2F60%29%29 = travel time of the truck, (convert 8 min to hrs)
:
When the car catches the truck they will have traveled the same dist
Write a dist equation, dist = speed * time
73t = 60(t+8%2F60)
distribute the 60
73t = 60t + 8
73t - 60t = 8
13t = 8
t = 8%2F13 hrs which is 8%2F13 * 60 = 36.9 min for the car to catch the truck

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
+8%2F60+=+1%2F15+ hrs is the 1st car's head start
Let +d+ = distance in miles the car travels
until it catches the truck
Let +t+ = time in hrs the car takes to catch the truck
--------------------------------
Equation for truck:
(1) +d+-+60%2A%281%2F15%29+=+60t+
Equation for car:
(2) +d+=+73t+
-----------------------------------
(1) +73t+-+60%2A%281%2F15%29+=+60t+
(1) +13t+=+4+
(1) +t+=+4%2F13+ hrs
+%28+4%2F13%29%2A60+=+18.46+
The car passes the truck in 18.46 minutes
-------------------------
check:
(2) +d+=+73t+
(2) +d+=+73%2A%284%2F13%29+
(2) +d+=+22.46+ mi
and

A truck enters a highway driving 60 mph. A car enters the highway at the same place 8 minutes later and drives 73 mph in the same direction. From the time the car enters the highway, how long will it take the car to pass the truck?
Let the time the car takes to overtake the truck be T
Then we get the following DISTANCE equation: matrix%281%2C3%2C+73T%2C+%22=%22%2C+60%28T+%2B+8%2F60%29%29
73T = 60T + 8 ---- Distributing right-side
73T - 60T = 8
13T = 8
