Sample of n=5scores has a mean of mu=12, 1 new score is added and the new mean is calculated to be mu=11, what is the new score?

5%2A12+=+60
Now we can add 11 to this
60%2B11=71
and divide by the new n which is 6
71%2F6+=+11.8333 <-- the new mean

The other tutor misread the given information; 11 is the new mean -- not the new score.

The old mean was 12 with 5 scores; so the total was 60.

The new mean is 11 with 6 scores; so the total is 66.

So the new (6th) score was 6.
