Shes in 6th grade doing 8th grade algebra. Below is exactly how the question is stated on her homework.

Solve the equation. Check your solution. S-□-4□=7.3 I'm extremely confused. Shouldn't x be used in place of the □?
My husband is a math wiz & this has him stumped as well. Thanks any help it is greatly appreciated.

My response : Don't spend your time for this nonsense.

It is a shame for authors of the 8-th grade Algebra textbook to write equation in this form.
